The Issues

Below you'll find the issues NFIB is currently tracking. Please don't hesitate to Contact Us should you feel there's a small business oriented issue that needs to be addressed.

Energy
  • Small business owners depend on energy supplies at globally competitive prices to operate and effectively run their businesses. But today's skyrocketing energy costs are financially crippling small business owners. According to the 2008 NFIB Small Business Problems and Priorities, the second most pressing problem for small businesses is the cost of natural gas, gasoline, propane, diesel, and fuel oil. NFIB is actively pushing lawmakers to pass legislation that would expand offshore oil drilling and exploration and ban the federal diesel tax. In order for the U.S. economy to withstand the current downturn, is critical that America's small businesses have access to affordable and reliable supplies of energy in order to remain competitive.

Health Care
  • Healthcare costs have been the No.1 issue facing small business since 1986. Small business owners and their employees are especially vulnerable to the weaknesses of our current system. Small businesses are begging for solutions to the healthcare crisis that effectively balance the competing goals of access to quality care, affordability, predictability and consumer choice.

Tax Relief
  • Today, small business growth is stifled by taxes that are too high and a system that is ridiculously complex and burdensome. NFIB is committed to permanent tax relief, abolishing the death tax and increasing small business expensing limits. Without a permanent, predictable policy environment in which to make sound business decisions, optimum small business growth will not be achieved.

Labor Issues
  • Small business owners know that their employees are their most valuable resource, and they work hard to train and retain employees by creating a comfortable workplace and rewarding them for a job well done. However, government mandates and regulations take away the flexibility small business owners need to effectively operate their business and shape the benefit plans that best suit the needs of their employees and their firms.
